$21,000 Raised for Northeast Regional Food Bank and Joseph’s House and Shelter
The 77th annual Troy Turkey Trot brought a sea of runners, walkers, and families together this morning to celebrate one of America’s oldest and most cherished Thanksgiving traditions. Presented by Pioneer, this beloved event welcomed 7,097 participants from 38 states and seven countries to the heart of the Collar City.
The day kicked off with the Capital Region’s only Thanksgiving Day 10K, where 1,307 athletes tackled the classic “out and back” course. Jack Huber of Delmar, N.Y. sped to the front, crossing the finish line first in 31:06, claiming the $300 prize. Rachel Peterson of Portland, Ore., took the women’s title with a winning time of 35:47, also earning the same purse.
Next up, the Grade School Mile gave young runners the chance to race in a festive chip-timed event, with 617 kids from 8th grade and below hitting the pavement. Shortly after, another 624 participants joined the Turkey Walk, a one-mile stroll that offered a laid-back option for those who wanted to burn a few calories before the holiday feast.
The excitement continued as more than 4,478 participants gathered for the much-anticipated 5K, the Trot’s featured race. Damian Hackett of Washington, D.C. claimed the men’s crown at Monument Square with a time of 14:59, while Gwen Parks of Winston Salem, N.C. was the first woman to finish, hitting the finish tape in 17:41.
Throughout the day, the spirit of Thanksgiving was alive and well as participants showed off their holiday cheer in the popular costume contest. From pilgrims to turkeys to creative twists on Thanksgiving staples, competitors wore their festive best for a chance to win awards for “Best Thanksgiving Day Costume” and “Most Unique Costume.”
True to the season, the Troy Turkey Trot also made an impact by raising funds for two local charities: the Regional Food Bank and Joseph’s House and Shelter. Thanks to the generosity of participants, the event raised more than $21,000 to support these vital organizations.
“It’s heartwarming to see so many families and individuals from across the region come together to make this Thanksgiving morning special,” said Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello. “The Troy Turkey Trot remains a cherished tradition that brings our community together in the spirit of fun, family, and fitness.”
